Public Outrage over Zainab Sheriff's Incitement Charges


IB Fornah, a leading commentator on Sierra Leone, recently shared clips from a vlog discussing the arrest and detention of Zainab Sheriff, who faces incitement charges.

In a recent program, Zainab argued that the first lady, Fatima Bio, should not be listed as a presidential candidate because she is married to the current president, and Sierra Leone is not a monarchy.

Zainab also criticized the first lady's role during Maada Bio's first term, saying it was inappropriate for someone aspiring to hold national office. 

She reminded her audience of incidents where the first lady allegedly encouraged "mob justice" and claimed that only members of the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) are true Sierra Leoneans.

Zainab emphasized that no political party is more important than the country itself and said that Sierra Leoneans own the SLPP, not the other way around.

She called the first lady's statement about non-SLPP members not being Sierra Leonean ignorant, and suggested the first lady should learn more about civics and nationhood.

Zainab also mistakenly claimed that the first lady is not Sierra Leonean because she arrived in the country as a nine-year-old immigrant.

She further expressed that if the first lady's only focus is on the president, then she is not serving Sierra Leone.

Zainab concluded by saying she believes the first lady is not sincere and would do anything to become a presidential nominee.

Hawa Hunt in custody after she was arrested live on air in Freetown, Sierra Leone

In 2023, Hawa Hunt, a popular musician and social commentator, made a striking statement on camera about Maada Bio, Sierra Leone's controversial president.  In the nearly five-minute video , which went viral on social media, Hawa Hunt spoke in Krio, and we've translated key excerpts of her comments into English:  "The man has big guts! MPox strains Sierra Leone's fragile health system

Physicians from Médecins sans Frontières (MSF or Doctors Without Borders) have recently reported that Sierra Leone is experiencing an outbreak of monkeypox, or MPox, with an average of 120 new cases recorded daily since April 25, 2025.  MSF has rehabilitated an infectious isolation ward in the nation's capital to support the response to the outbreak. They have also donated infection prevention and control materials and installed a chlorine production unit. Furthermore, MSF donated a pickup truck and four motorbikes to the district health management team in Kenema District , located in eastern Sierra Leone, to enhance surveillance and contact tracing for MPox and Lassa Fever.
