Maada Bio's war on Sierra Leone's democracy


The State Department has launched the 2023 Human Rights Report, which presents a factual, systematic account of human rights records across nearly 200 countries and territories. For Sierra Leone, significant human rights issues included:

Credible reports of arbitrary or unlawful killings.

Harsh and life-threatening prison conditions.

Arbitrary arrest or detention.

Political prisoners or detainees.

Substantial interference with the freedom of peaceful assembly.

Serious government corruption.

Extensive gender-based violence, including domestic or intimate partner violence, sexual violence, child, early, and forced marriage.

Haja Zainab Hawa Bangura is a Sierra Leonean politician and social activist. She was appointed as Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General on Sexual Violence in Conflict in September 2012.  "Today, on this very solemn day, I want us to remember all those who gave their lives to save the city after the January 6 attack. " By Christmas Day 1998, the rebels led by the late Solomon A.J. Musa were at Waterloo and Freetown was under siege. Freetown covers about 35 square miles and approximately 1.1 million people live within its land area.  There are huge challenges with the transport system, solid waste management and sewage management. Andrew Keili, author of Ponder My Thoughts Volume 1 , a collection of news analysis, opinion, and essays on the most talked-about topics in Sierra Leone, looks at what the city and the national government should do to ease the problems.  The city of Freetown celebrated her 225th birthday on Saturday March 11 amidst much pomp at pageantry outside the Law Courts Building.
